Introduction To Pallet Racking Installation(1)

Pallet racking systems are a staple in efficient storage management, playing a crucial role in warehouses and distribution centers. They are designed to maximize storage space and improve inventory accessibility. However, the success of these systems hinges on their proper pallet-racking installation. A well-installed pallet rack system not only ensures optimal space utilization but also maintains workplace safety and operational efficiency.

Understanding Different Types of Pallet Racks

In general, proper installation of rack systems includes site preparation, designing and procuring a system that allows for proper load capacity and space restrictions, and ensuring the system meets all regulatory requirements. However, each type of pallet rack system has unique considerations for proper installation. Read below for tips on each type of rack system.

Selective Pallet Rack

Uses: Selective pallet rack is the most common type of pallet rack. It is ideal for warehouses storing a variety of palletized items. It provides direct access to every pallet, making it perfect for facilities with a high turnover rate or those that need quick access to every SKU.

Installation Tips: When installing selective rack, consider the aisle width and system height requirements for the material handling equipment you use for picking. The system should accommodate the type of forklift truck used. For narrow aisles, installing down-aisle guides can be helpful in avoiding forklift impact.

Drive-In and Drive-Through Pallet Rack

Uses: Drive-in and drive-through rack is designed for high-density storage. Drive-in rack is accessible from one side, making it a last-in-first-out (LIFO) system, while drive-through rack is accessible from both sides, making it a first-in-first-out (FIFO) system. They are ideal for storing large quantities of similar products that require large, one-time moves.

Installation Tips: Because forklifts drive into these rack systems, ensuring stability and safety is paramount. For example, install cant-back style uprights in high traffic areas to help avoid forklift impact. Pay close attention to the depth of storage lanes and ensure that the racks can support the weight of stored goods, especially in tall configurations.

Push-Back Pallet Rack

Uses: Push back rack is designed for storing multiple pallets of the same SKU in a single row. It is ideal for spaces where high density storage is required without sacrificing selectivity. Each pallet is stored on a cart placed on a slightly inclined rail and pushed back by subsequent pallets, allowing for easy access and retrieval. Push back rack required one lane for loading and unloading, making it a LIFO storage system.

Installation Tips: It's essential that the rails are perfectly aligned and level and the push-back mechanism is functioning smoothly. The weight of the pallets should be within the rack’s capacity to avoid overloading and potential rack failure. Additionally, install pallet stops on each level to keep the pallets in place and prevent them from sliding off when loaded.

Pallet Flow Rack

Uses: Pallet flow rack is designed for FIFO inventory management. They are ideal for storing perishable goods or items with expiration dates. Pallet flow rack requires two aisles, one for loading and one for unloading. Pallets are loaded at the higher end and glide down to the other side for retrieval. Once the front pallet is removed, the next one glides into picking position.

Installation Tips: The rack must be installed at the correct incline to allow pallets to flow smoothly by gravity. The incline required for the specific products being stored should be verified prior to installation. Correct installation of rollers and brakes is critical for a smooth operation. For example, the spacing of the rollers should be consistent to ensure even load distribution.
